We often hear from customers that hiking a glacier is on their “travel bucket list". Getting onto that ice is often the realisation of a dream. What’s even cooler is how exhilarated hikers are after the experience, a walk amongst stunning glacial landscapes never disappoints.
Just in case you don’t have glacier hiking on your bucket list, we’ve thought of 5 good reasons why you need to add it to that list. This week, here’s number 5… the amazing blue ice of a glacier.
Blue Ice is one of the most stunning occurrences found in nature and one that can only be found amongst the unique landscape of a glacier. Formed when air is compressed out of snow under the weight of the glacier, blue ice is the inner core of the glacier exposed. Blue ice is not seen on the surface of the glacier as the effect of sunlight melts the surface ice making it less dense. With the help of an expert glacier guide, you may well discover icy blue crevasses and caves on the glacier.
