A trip down memory lane.. ice skating on the glacier

A trip down memory lane.... when there was Ice Skating at Franz Josef! We can't imagine a frozen lake at the end of the glacier these days. But around 70 years ago, it was the perfect spot for ice skating!

As we all know too well, Franz Josef Glacier is always changing. At the moment, there is a major depression that has formed in the glacier, which has meant we now run our glacier trips a little differently. But that's just the way it is on a glacier!

The glacier will keep on moving and changing, and affecting the way that glacier guiding trips are run. Back in the early 1940's a large block of moraine-covered ice blocked the valley, causing a large lake to form. For many years, access to the glacier was by row boats across this newly formed lake. During winter, this lake would often freeze. Not to miss out an opportunity for a bit of fun, visitors and locals would get their skates on and enjoy some ice skaing on the frozen lake. Sounds like great fun. Unfortunately, there is no chance of that these days. An extended period of advancement for the glacier caused shingle to fill the lake in over many years. No more lake, meant no more ice skating. But you never know what might happen with a glacier...
