We get asked that question a lot and the short answer is no.
We run a Glacier Valley Walk that doesn’t involve a helicopter ride. This 3-hour trip is an immersive experience including guided commentary as you walk through rainforest tracks and along the valley floor. You’ll get exclusive access to a viewing point that will give you a sense of the huge scale of Franz Josef Glacier. This is a stunning trip and perfect for those who would prefer to stay at lower levels, or gain an understanding of the stunning size of the glacier and its environment.
But if you’re looking to up the adrenaline factor of your glacier experience, then check out the Ice Explorer or Heli Hike trips. Both these trips include a helicopter transfer.
Well, do we even need to say that helicopters are awesome? It is by far the coolest way to arrive on the ice and you’ll feel like a rock star as you board the heli, ready to get whisked up to the ice.
The other huge benefit of accessing the glacier by helicopter is that you are transferred directly onto the best bits of the glacier. Because it’s steep and narrow, Franz Josef Glacier displays a stunning array of crevasses, caves and blue ice. If you want to hike amongst these jaw-dropping sights, you need to get a good way up the glacier.
And a helicopter is the best way to do that.
The Ice Explorer trip offers a shorter “heli-hop” ride in the helicopter. The Heli Hike offers a slightly longer scenic, helicopter ride.
And just in case you needed proof, here’s some of our favourite customer shots of good times with helicopters and ice! See you on the ice.
