Franz Josef’s newest café opens at Glacier Base
The Franz Josef Glacier Guides team moved into Glacier Base building earlier this year. We love our new home at the quiet end of Cron Street, and we love sharing this cool new space with Glacier Hot Pools. It’s the perfect place to hang out and soak up all that Franz Josef Glacier is famous for… glaciers, hiking, hot pools and mountain views.
And now there’s one more thing to enjoy at Glacier Base.
The Glacier Base Café is open. It’s the perfect place to grab some delicious food and drink before or after a Franz Josef adventure. With Wi-Fi, a lounge area and great views from the deck, this is one of the best spots in Franz Josef.
Whether you’re heading off on an Ice Explorer, Glacier Heli Hike, or a Glacier Valley Walk, you’ll need to make sure you’re fuelled up. The café is located in the same building as the check-in for Franz Josef Glacier Guides, so it’s the easiest way to fuel up before you head out.
In the heart of the action
While sipping on your tea, watch our teams prepare to head up onto the ice, and listen to the helicopters as they head off for the next ice adventure. Brush up on your knowledge of all things glacier and hiking by having a good read through the Info Boards in the building.
What about the food?
The café has delicious sandwiches, pies and wraps. Grab a Vivace coffee or a delicious Stir Tea. Stir Tea is premium New Zealand loose-leaf tea with a range of caffeine-free herbal and fruit teas. It’s the perfect tea to enjoy while you sit and ponder the adventures you’ve had, or are about to have.
It goes without saying the scenery here is pretty spectacular. On a clear day, you can see what the weather's doing on the mountains. That’s the snowy peaks of the Southern Alps you’re looking at, and it’s not a bad view at all.
And one last thing…..
There’s something a little bit special about our toilets. We’re nestled amongst lush rainforest here, so we’re keeping the rainforest theme going. You'll have to come in and see for yourself!
