Did you know that one in three international visitors to New Zealand do an adventure activity while they’re here? That’s a lot of adventuring! It makes you think how important it is for tourism businesses to have good procedures and regulations in place to keep all those adventuring customers safe.
At Franz Josef Glacier Guides we always strive to go above and beyond industry regulations, as well as our own internal procedures to ensure safety.
There are daily checks on gear, the weather, the state of the ice on the glacier and the guides. If anything ever went wrong on the glacier, there’s a reserve of safety gear and rescue equipment on the ice.
And of course, the quality of our guiding team is paramount as well. You need more than a love of mountains to get a job around here. All guides working for Franz Josef Glacier Guides have First Aid Training, they also hold (or work toward) the Hard Ice Guide Certification through The New Zealand Mountain Guides Association (NZMGA). And on top of that, training, reviews and assessments are on going for all staff no matter how long they’ve been in the business.
But that’s just the safety stuff we do ourselves. There are also industry regulations to keep adventure activity operators up to scratch. It’s something all New Zealand adventure tourism businesses are focused on at the moment.
Implemented by WorkSafe NZ, these new regulations ensure all adventure activity operators have passed a safety audit and certification process. The Adventure Activity Regulation Certification is pretty important stuff. Regulations like this ensure that activity operators are keeping both customers and staff safe.
Is Franz Josef Glacier Guides a certified Adventure Activity?
Yes, we sure are. We believe so strongly in this process, we’ve been certified since 2013.
Franz Josef Glacier Guides takes its safety procedures very seriously. As well as our Adventure Activity Regulation Certification, we have a Safety Management Systems that’s audited internally and externally several times a year.
We’re accredited by Telarc for the Adventure Activities Regulations and ISO standard 4801. We are also audited by Qualmark, New Zealand’s official quality mark issued to operators when the highest standards of operation excellence are met.
So, we work pretty hard to ensure we’re a safe business. Feel free to talk to any of the team about our commitment to safety when next you visit.
