Conservation Week on the Glacier

At Franz Josef Glacier Guides, kaitiakitanga (guardianship) is at the heart of everything we do. From the ice under our feet to the rainforest at its edge, we’re proud to play our part in protecting this special place for future generations.

Our kaimahi (guides) contribute to this work in a number of different ways, including

  • Supporting the Ōkārito Plant Project, helping restore native habitat through community-led planting.
  • Backing the annual Gorse Busters effort, tackling invasive weeds to give our native species the chance to thrive.
  • Working with Predator Free South Westland to eliminate invasive predators like stoats and rats and protect our native wildlife.
  • Sharing the Tiaki Promise - a commitment to care for New Zealand, for now and for future generations - on a daily basis through our experience and our behaviours.
  • Actively monitoring the glacier environment to better understand the impacts of climate change.
  • Reducing our footprint with sustainable guiding practices and ongoing investment in better transport.
  • Inspiring thousands of manuhiri each year to connect with the whenua, and to take the conservation message home with them.

Did you know you can play your part by choosing to donate a tree to our planting project when you visit? Simply add to cart when checking out, and you'll be leaving a positive impact to the West Coast as part of your visit.

This Conservation Week, we celebrate the collective effort it takes to care for Te Tai o Poutini. Every step on the ice is also a step towards protecting Aotearoa’s precious taonga
